Lake County is really two housing stocks, and they need opposite things. The older homes toward the North Shore, Lake Forest, Highland Park, Lake Bluff, carry real wood siding, trim, and detail that reward careful hand-prep and lead-safe practices on anything built before 1978. Out west and north, in the newer subdivisions around Gurnee, Grayslake, and Vernon Hills, the challenge is exposure: twenty- to forty-year-old homes whose original finish has given up on the sun-and-weather side first.
Either way, our winters run the job. Freeze-thaw cycles pry at any surface that wasn't prepped and sealed right, and lake-effect damp punishes shaded, north-facing walls. So we coat for the exposure a wall actually gets, seal the spots water wants to get in, and time the work to the weather, because a repaint rushed onto a dirty or damp surface in the wrong month is a repaint you'll be doing again.
